Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson
This is a quietly powerful book. I wouldn't recommend it to most adolescents because it speaks with a subtley and sense of reflection that years on this planet can provide. The setting for this novel is Petterson's native Norway. The novel uses the framework of a memoir but switchs back and forth between the war years (circa 1943) and the present.
